Objectives:
After completion of this session, participants will be able to:

-Recognize the rationale and current evidence for integrating health promotion strategies into pediatric physical therapy practice
-Discuss the range of evidence-based evaluation and intervention options pediatric physical therapists can use to address health behaviors in children
-Practice using recommended tools and strategies when designing plans of care for health promotion and wellness

Description:
Pediatric physical therapists play pivotal roles in promoting child health and wellness because they enter a child and family’s life at a time when health behaviors may be modifiable. This session will provide current perspectives, rationale, and evidence for the integration of health promotion and wellness interventions into pediatric physical therapy practice. Outcome measures and intervention recommendations will be outlined to assist therapists in identifying health risks and developing a plan of care to facilitate healthy behaviors in children. There will be small group discussions to brainstorm how to apply this knowledge to case examples.

Carissa Wengrovius, PT, DPT, PhD is an assistant professor in the DPT program at the University of Vermont. She is also a 200-hour registered yoga teacher and has taught children’s yoga for over ten years. Her research examines the effects of mind-body practices for promoting physical, mental, and social health.
